This is the part of our fatherhood series where we asked dads to share a little about themselves, their most prominent memory of their first year of fatherhood, the best parenting advice they have received and a message for dads-to-be. Each answer was limited to 50 words and you find them here unedited and as given.
Hi, I’m Jon. I’m 28 years old and work as a Sales & Marketing Manager for a local technology research firm. I’ve been married for 8 years this summer to my lovely wife Hayley, and we have two amazing boys, Henry (4) and Arthur (2).
Prominent memory of your first year of fatherhood:
I have 2 prominent moments of Henry’s first year. One involves projectile liquid leading to repainting the bedroom (☺), the other when he learnt to crawl round our garden in summer months and I simply walked after him, helping him explore the new surroundings.
Best fatherhood advice received:
The best advice I had was being willing to loosen control. I’m very control minded, but that doesn’t always allow children the environment to learn and grow. I had to be less controlling and more trusting. Challenging at first, but very soon I could see the benefits.
Message for men expecting their first baby:
Relish it. You can never prepare fully for being a father, sleepless nights etc, but you won’t help yourself worrying about it. Instead, enjoy this once in a lifetime experience. Throw all that you are into your kid; you’ll grow into fatherhood as they grow into a child.
